Shorthand manual, 1723 Feb 22.

Manuscript, in a single secretary hand, of a shorthand manual. The manual explains and demonstrates shorthand symbols and principles by way of various lessons which focus particularly on translating the Bible. The volume begins with shorthand symbols for every letter of the alphabet, joining letters, prepositions, and endings of words; progresses to chapters of the Bible, common English words, and popular phrases in the New Testament; and concludes with an excerpt from the Bible in shorthand. Throughout, the shorthand symbols are accompanied by explanatory notes and rules. The volume also includes a chart titled The chiefest of the letters and shortned words that I wrote in Mr Weston's method of short hand. The work is prefaced by ten leaves, in a different hand, of mathematical tables, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division tables, as well as weight tables and a pence table. In a third hand, the hand of "Thomas Osborne" whose signature appears on the flyleaf, interleaved with the shorthand chart, is written an essay about the size and makeup of the European continent.
